As an employer, your time is valuable. You have tons to do and not enough time in the day to do it. I

understand your frustration as I am in the same boat. Trying to find the time to get everything done

seems endless. And interviewing someone to some people seems like a nightmare. Well guess what….

interviewing someone doesn’t have to be mundane and time consuming, it actually can be an enjoyable

experience. After all, you are screening someone to be part of your family, your team. Here are a 5

simple ways to conduct an amazing interview that will help you screen out the people you want working

for you and the screen out the people who are not the right fit.

  1. Don’t ask “store bought” Human Resource” questions you found on google. Ask thought provoking questions to your candidate. Ask open ended questions that will make your candidate think above and beyond to answer you sincerely. Let the conversation flow. Don’t follow a script or an agenda.
  2. Do your research and read their resume in great detail. Maybe find them on Linkedin. See what they are interested in besides work. Maybe they have a passion in helping children. Get to know your candidate so you can ask the right questions.
  3. Make sure you have a nice clean desk or table to meet with them. Having a messy desk is distracting to both parties.
  4. Body language is everything. When you are conducting your meeting open your arms when you speak with your candidate. Don’t ever cross them. Opening your arms will say you invite them in.
  5. Keep track of your time. A good interview should be no longer than 45 minutes. You should be able to record everything in your head and on paper on what you need to know about this person.
